Toy poodles, Terriers, Beagles, and Shih Tzus are some of the most adorable and cutest dogs a dog lover would want to have as one of his best friends. But as these cute and small dogs amuse us with their looks, they are the dogs which are most common to having halitosis or bad dog breath.

Halitosis or bad breath is one of the problems that a dog owner faces. There are a number of bad breath causes. First is tartar build up on the dog’s teeth that leads to plaque or bacteria build up. When bacteria build up, they destroy the teeth and the gums causing it to swell and eventually bleed. When this happen, dogs get gingivitis and periodontis that eventually result to bad breath.

However, bad breath is not only caused by plaque but may also be caused by a more serious health problem in the dog’s system. When dogs have a problem with their lungs, foul breath is noticeable. Veterinarians say that dogs that have dental problems usually have heart murmurs because the flow of blood to the heart is already affected by the bacteria in the dog’s teeth. This bad breath that leads to sickness and vice versa of course has a cure.

As bad breath has different causes, bad breath treatment also differs depending on the cause. If the cause of the foul odor is tartar build up and plaque, frequent brushing of the teeth is advised. Food that dog eats should also be high-quality and easy to digest. Toys that dogs can chew may also be a way to clean their teeth, so owners should provide toys which are safe to chew and at the same time, teeth-cleaning.

Breath sprays for dogs are also available to manage the breath odor. Several natural processes of dog brushing can be done, such as brushing the teeth using baking soda and an ordinary toothbrush. Dog toothpaste and toothbrush, however, are also available.

If the cause of bad breath is internal organ failure, medical or veterinary treatment should be done. This will allow the doctor to perform a complete oral examination, periodontal probing, or mouth x-ray to root the cause of bad breath and at the same time, attend to the medical need of the dog in case an internal organ problem is diagnosed.
