Tooth brushing for dogs is very stressful since it is something they do not naturally do. So in order not to upset your dog by using your own toothpaste as his toothpaste, here are some ways and some tooth pastes to have an enjoying tooth brushing experience with your dogs.
Dog tooth brushes vary depending on the owner’s choice or the dog’s behavior. The toothbrush may be as simple as the toothbrush used by humans, however, a soft finger tooth brush which is especially designed for dogs may be used. Some pet owners also use electric toothbrushes, which makes it easier for them since they would not exert the effort of brushing. They will just point to the canine tooth that needs the brushing, then push the button of the electric toothbrush. After choosing the toothbrush for your dog, toothpaste is next on the list.
Dog toothpastes can decrease the dog and owner’s stress by 50% if the owner knows how to choose the right toothpaste for his pet. Dog toothpastes come in different forms. It may be like the usual paste form, but there are also liquid forms which may just be sprayed in the dog’s mouth before brushing.
It is important when choosing the dog toothpaste to check if the toothpaste has enzymatic content. Enzymatic toothpastes are most required by veterinarians to be used in dogs. Enzymatic toothpastes contain glucose oxidase or a combination of glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase. These two substances reduce microorganism build-up in the dog’s teeth. Enzymatic toothpastes do not need to be rinsed, unlike humans tooth paste. Enzymatic toothpastes are edible and most of these are flavored to reduce the dog’s stress when brushing the teeth.
Toothpastes also come in different flavors like chicken, beef, seafood, and vanilla. These are all available in pet shops or online shops. For a more personal tooth brushing, dog toothpaste can also be made at home. To make your own dog toothpaste, combine six teaspoons of baking soda, 1/3 teaspoon of salt, 4 teaspoons of glycerin, and 2 teaspoons of your preferred flavor for the toothpaste.
Mix everything and then refrigerate. The mixture must be the same as the usual toothpaste you use at home.
These flavored toothpastes are advisable to lessen the dog’s stress because it may seem as if you are just feeding them. When brushing your dog’s teeth, do not force him, instead cuddle him and let him lick the flavored toothpaste. As you let him taste the toothpaste, gradually start brushing his teeth. Praise or talk to your dog while you are brushing his teeth. Just enjoy the brushing time and consider it as your owner-pet bonding time. Do this at least twice a week. The longer you do the brushing moments with your dog, the more he gets used to it and tooth brushing will be one of the experiences he’ll look forward doing.
